First First Aid Success
On Thursday 27th April, 84 Air Cadets and staff from Glasgow and the West of Scotland received their St John’s Ambulance First Aid from Assistant Chief Officer Andy Shuttleworth of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue at the Brigades’ Headquarters in Hamilton. This is the first such award to any Air Cadets in Scotland.
The cadets and staff had worked hard over the past year at a series of courses to achieve these awards. The courses were run by Lieutenant Martin Roach, the Wing First Aid Officer with a dedicated team of instructors. The cadets under the age of 16 attained the Junior Lifesaver Award, while those over 16 became Adult Lifesavers.
To attain the Young Lifesaver Plus Award the cadets complete a full weekends training covering CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and internal and external bleeding. They then have to pass a multiple choice exam with a minimum score of 18 out of 25.
The Lifesaver Plus Award also requires a full weekends training, building to give the candidates the skills and knowledge to cope with emergency situations. There are nine subjects covered, split into three parts. A general introduction to first aid, Lifesaver first aid and a multiple choice exam. The course also equips the candidates to teach and assess the Young Lifesaver Plus Award.
Wing Commander George Campbell, the commanding officer of Glasgow and West Scotland Wing of the Air Cadets said that he was very proud that so many had managed to achieve the award in such a short time. He hopes that this success can be repeated next year with even more members of the Wing becoming trained Lifesavers.
Cadets and staff from as far afield as Lanark, Irvine, Claydebank and Cumbernauld were present along with a large contingent from Glasgow itself.
Squadron Leader Alan Paterson thanked Assistant Chief Officer Andy Shuttleworth of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue for their generous support of the presentations and in return presented ACO Shuttleworth with a Wing Plaque and a donation to the Fire Brigade Windows & Orphans Fund.
