ATC Activites - Target Shooting

All cadets within the ATC have the opportunity to take part in rifle shooting.

The sport of rifle shooting was introduced as a Corps activity when the ATC was a recruiting organisation for the RAF. The activity has been retained by the Corps even though the organisation does not recruit for the RAF.

All shooting is carried out on firing ranges, under strictly controlled conditions. All staff involved with shooting have to meet certain standards of competency, and must also be qualified to conduct the training that the cadets undertake. In addition, all cadets must pass weapons handling tests (these demonstrate competency with a specific weapon), in order to undertake live firing.

Cadets have the opportunity to fire a number of cadet weapons either at one of the many local firing ranges, or as part of the Squadron, Wing, Regional or Corps team at one of the several competitions that take place annually.

There are also a number of awards that cadets can gain for target shooting, including the ATC Marksman, RAF Marksman, or the Cadet 100 badge. These are awarded to cadets who meet certain standards of marksmanship.

Target shooting is one of the activities that cadets from 2319 Squadron often excel in, with the squadron team winning the Regional Shooting Championships in 2003. The squadron also participates annually at several shooting competitions at Wing, Regional and Corps levels.
