Cadet Rank Structure

Within ATC squadrons, there are two types of rank structure. There is the adult rank structure that affects all of the adult staff within the unit. There is also a cadet rank structure.

The cadet rank structure exists to keep the squadron running efficiently, and to help in all aspects of the squadron activities.

When a cadet is given a rank, they are given responsibility for the welfare and discipline of other cadets below their rank. A rank in the military is similar to a civilian job where positions such as supervisor and manager may exist within an organisation, with responsibility for given tasks and a number of people under their command.

The decision to promote a cadet to a rank within the ATC is taken by the Squadron Commander (usually after consultation with their staff). Cadets can be promoted to the Junior NCO position (Corporal) from cadet, and existing cadet NCOs within the squadron can be promoted to Senior NCO ranks (Sergeant and Flight Sergeant).

Promotion to Cadet Warrant Officer is initiated by the Squadron CO, but is only awarded after successful completion of an interview by a Wing Staff Officer.

The cadet rank structure can be seen below:
