The ATC Adult Rank Structure
The ATC at the squadron level of the organisation is run by adult volunteers who provide their services to the organisation in addition to their usual employment.
The adult ranks of the ATC are made up of three different types of adult staff:
An example overview of the way that these staff fit into the ACO structure is as follows:
Wing Commander
|
RAF VR(T) Officers usually undertake a managerial role within the Air Training Corps. The rank of "Wing Commander" is usually held by the Commanding Officer of a Wing. 2319 Squadron is within Glasgow and West of Scotland (GWS) Wing. The "Wing Commanding Officer" of GWS Wing is Wing Commander G. Campbell RAFVR(T). The rank of "Squadron Leader" is usually held by Senior Staff Officers within the Corps (at HQAC, Regional, or Wing Level). The Deputy Commanding Officer of a Wing usually holds the rank of Squadron Leader. The Squadron Commanding Officer or CO is usually a Flight Lieutenant and usually has more junior ranking officers within a squadron (quantity depending on squadron size) to run specific areas of the squadron such as training, administration, or other such duties as necessary. Officers within the ATC are appointed within the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch), hold the Queen's Commission, and are subject to the Air Force Law. Officers within the RAF VR(T) follow the same rank structure as regular RAF officers. Officers within the RAF VR(T) can be readily identified by a badge with the initials "VRT" attached to their rank slides. |

ATC Adult Warrant
Officers (AWO) usually undertake the role of maintaining a high level of
discipline within a squadron, and managing the squadron's NCO team (the
front-line of squadron discipline).
ATC Warrant Officers often undertake other duties such as Squadron Adjutant or any of the other duties undertaken by squadron officers, with the exception of Squadron CO. The ATC Adult Warrant Officer is an ATC appointment. ATC Warrant Officers can be readily identified by a distinguishing badge with the initials "ATC" attached to their rank slides. |

Civilian Instructors (CI)
are adult volunteers who are civilian non-uniformed members of the ATC
adult staff structure who volunteer their services for a variety of training roles
within the squadron environment.
They often bring to the ATC a vast range of knowledge and experience that they pass onto cadets as part of their training. CI's within a squadron can hold a variety of appointments within the squadron organisational structure, but are usually involved in cadet training duties as a primary role. Civilian Instructors can often be readily identified by wearing a distinguishing armband as seen on the left. |
All staff within a squadron, regardless of rank, usually take an active training role.
All staff within a squadron are committed to working as part of the squadron team, ensuring that the squadron runs smoothly, and that the full range of opportunities continue to be made available to cadets within the Air Training Corps.
